One ranger dead, another shot in the neck…

The Kabaraza Patrol Post was attacked last night and one ranger was killed and another critically wounded by a gunshot to the neck. Robert Muir from Frankfurt Zoological Society is on his way to check out the situation & take medical supplies for the wounded ranger.
The kabaraza Post is a little way north of the gorilla sector but this shows that tension within Virunga National Park is still high.
More news as we receive it.

Newborn gorilla is a boy

bilali-newborn2-220807.jpg

Bilali gave birth to this bumper little baby gorilla on Wednesday 22nd August. It often takes months to determine the sex of a newborn, but the rangers were lucky enough to quickly determine it’s a boy! Bilali is the only female in a group comprising two silverbacks and three blackback gorillas. She’ll hopefully have plenty of support from them!

This is wonderful news after all the recent carnage - let’s all hope it’s a good sign…..

Well done Bilali from G4G!

Want to help the gorillas & rangers?

clare_card_400w.jpg

Here at G4G we’re currently having technical problems with our ‘donate’ buttons.

However, G4G works in partnership with WildlifeDirect (led by Dr Richard Leakey, famous for his work saving elephants in Kenya) and they have staff on the ground in Virunga National Park, whom I stayed with on my recent visit to DR Congo. They have a web site where you can donate funds to help, particularly in this desperately urgent time, when mtn gorillas have recently been deliberately killed.

Go to www.wildlifedirect.org and read the blogs direct from the rangers. Click on ‘Gorilla Protection’ or ‘Paulin Ngobobo’

You can donate directly via that site. If you donate or leave a comment on a blog, do let them know you found them via G4G. The rangers need to know that supporters in the UK are following their important work.

Alternatively, go to ‘About Camp Karema’ on this site and print off the Standing Order mandate at the bottom. Fill in & take to your bank to begin helping these rangers at the sharp end in the gorilla sector.  G4G has pledged to sponsor half the rangers at this new tented camp, right at the sharp end of gorilla protection. Wildlifedirect are sponsoring the other half. Rangers are there 24 hrs day & night, guarding the gorilla groups - very dangerous work, particularly at the moment.

Every penny of your donation to G4G will be sent each month to keep the rangers going at Camp Karema - providing rations, fuel, medical & other essential equipment.

Your help will be appreciated, however it gets there…..
