Heavy Fighting in Gorilla Sector
News from G4G contacts in DRC suggests that there are helicopter gunships, many tanks and heavy artillery being used within the Mikeno gorilla sector. Roads are being closed and the border with Rwanda may or may not be closed - conflicting reports. The last we heard was that all the rangers in the sector were grouped together at the main ranger station of Rumangabo, sleeping with their families under sheeting, waiting for this to end. They may well have left there now.
The army has stated for a while that the time had come to force Nkunda & his men from the area - we will wait and see. Obviously, this latest fighting is potentially catastrophic for the gorillas. We can only wait & pray that they take themselves from danger, as must the rangers and their families.
The first ‘G-bulletin’ is well underway, although we may wait to see what unfolds before finishing it. It will be sent to all ‘Friends of G4G’ and those who sponsor Camp Bukima. This is the worst, long term heavy fighting in eastern DR Congo for some time - although it’s never been a secure place for decades.
Everyone is holding their breath….
