About Camp Karema

Camp Karema has been set up in direct response to the killings of at least two silverback mountain gorillas by rebels in January 2007. Four other gorillas are still missing. Assurances have now been given that the rangers can safely re-enter and set up camp right in the heart of Virunga National Park. The camp has been named after ‘Karema’ one of the slain silverbacks.

There has not been a permanent ranger presence here, since Dian Fossey was forced to flee to Rwanda in 1973. This is a truly exceptional move by the brave rangers of eastern DR Congo, in their ongoing pledge to protect the mountain gorilla. The camp will enable 24hr, 365 days a year surveillance and monitoring of the gorillas. G4G is working closely with Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), WildlifeDirect and the rangers of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) to enable Camp Karema to operate effectively, long into the future.

There will be two camp managers and 10 rangers/trackers based at the camp. They will need a vehicle, radios, equipment to remove snares, monitor and record gorilla behaviour and, most importantly, the rangers will be constantly on hand to protect the gorillas from the many dangers that exist in Virunga National Park.

Augustin Kambale will be head up the G4G team at Camp Karema. He was born in Beni and is 30 years old. He is married to Josephine and has 3 sons. He has been a Congo Ranger since 1989 and has always worked in the Mikeno sector protecting Mountain Gorillas. He has also worked at other anti-poaching activities. He is very passionate about the Gorillas as you will see on the video on the web site.

  • FZS are providing for the two camp managers, a vehicle and the tents.
  • WildlifeDirect are providing for 5 of the rangers/tracker team members.
  • You will be providing for the remaining 5 rangers/trackers through G4G .

G4G will send £500 a month, via WildlifeDirect, to provide for the ranger team at Camp Karema. G4G is busy fundraising through events and presentations but your help is needed. Become a Custodian of Camp Karema today and be on the front line of gorilla conservation.

The monthly costs associated with the 5 strong ranger/tracker team are as follows:
